Pokies gamblers can access cash by Eftpos inside pub gaming areas under controversial legislation passed by South Australian Parliament

GAMBLERS will be able to access cash by Eftpos inside the pokie areas of South Australian pubs under new legislation passed by State Parliament on Tuesday night.

The State Government has defended the move, saying it will ensure “human interaction” with potential problem gamblers who would otherwise access cash outside the venue.

It has raised concern among anti-gambling advocates who say giving punters easier access to cash near pokies will reduce breaks in play that may lead to them to cease playing.

In June, independent John Darley moved an amendment opposing the removal of the ban but failed to win support of the major parties or crossbench.

Police Minister Tony Piccolo said “Eftpos facilities provide a degree of human interaction”.

“Currently, gamblers would be required to leave the gaming room and withdraw cash using Eftpos facilities outside the gaming area,” he said. “The gambler may not be able to be observed or served by trained gaming area staff while undertaking the Eftpos transaction.

“If the Eftpos facility is located in the gaming area, there is a better chance of the appropriate

intervention, where a gambler is being observed by a trained gaming manager or employee.

“This situation currently exists in the Adelaide Casino.”
