Man dies after citizen’s arrest at Hyde Park Hotel
A MAN has died in hospital following a citizen’s arrest after he was allegedly caught smashing car windows in a North Perth hotel carpark on Thursday night.
Just before 9pm the man, 36, was believed to be smashing his way into several cars parked in the Dan Murphy’s carpark, near the Hyde Park Hotel, on the corner of Bulwer Street and Fitzgerald Street, North Perth.
The man was allegedly armed with a hammer and went on a rampage, smashing cars on the street and in the hotel carpark.
A number of people are believed to have witnessed the man.
Witnesses said three men pinned the injured man to the ground, in a citizen’s arrest, but when they turned him over he was unconscious.
The man was taken to Royal Perth by St John Ambulance where he was said to be in a critical condition, but died Friday morning.
The men who conducted the citizen’s arrest had been working out before the incident at the Platform CrossFit gym on Fitzgerald Street.
A spokeswoman for the gym said she could confirm club members were involved, but wouldn’t release any further details to respect members privacy.
An ambulance was called at 9.01pm and the 36-year-old man was rushed to Royal Perth Hospital in a critical condition.
Detectives and forensic officers spent several hours at the scene gathering evidence.
No charges have been laid over the incident.
Major Crime are investigating and a report will be prepared for the Coroner.
This incident follows another citizen’s arrest late last month, where an alleged thief died.
A homeowner, believed to be a former police officer, was walking his dog at night when he returned home to find two men acting suspiciously outside his Lockridge home.
One man fled the scene but he was able to capture the other man and was restraining him when he died.
