Underpaid hospitality, retail workers may be creating an employee 'underclass'

Are we creating an underclass of workers?

There have been numerous reports this year of companies paying employees well under the minimum wage, often cash in hand.

Josh Bornstein of Maurice Blackburn told Neil Mitchell it's occurred in hospitality, retail - even Australia Post.

"I've dealt with employees being given what's called 'training', and they're not paid anything," Mr Bornstein said on Monday.

Mr Bornstein said it's impossible to determine exactly how widespread this "problematic, precarious employment" is.
