Council hands over keys to Nightcliff’s controversial seaside cafe

NIGHTCLIFF’S controversial seaside cafe is set to become the town’s newest beachside dining venue after the keys were officially handed over by council on Thursday.

Darwin Lord Mayor Katrina Fong Lim handed over the keys to lessee Seonaid Gallacher whose family have run Fannie Bay’s Cool Spot for the last 17 years.

The $1.53 million controversial cafe, expected to open mid January, has caused much heated debate between local residents and council since the council first began its consultation three years ago.

Ms Fong Lim said she was excited to see the cafe almost complete.

“It’s been an interesting project and a long time coming,” Ms Fong Lim said.

“It’s going to look even better when the lessees fit it out, and I’m looking forward to having my first cup of tea (here).”

Alderman Robyn Knox fiercely opposed the cafe since it was first announced, but went to the event.

“I don’t think it’s the best way council could spend the money but now that it is here I hope people can enjoy it,” Ms Knox said.

Ms Gallacher said The Foreshore Cafe’s menu will include a range of Australian food, and mostly Northern Territory caught seafood.

“The aim is to market it towards locals, tourists and people exercising, and families,” she said.

An application for a liquor licence is being processed.

Food van operators have also voiced concerns about the cafe interrupting business but Ms Gallacher said the cafe won’t have much impact.
