Time-poor Aussies choosing to order food to save time

  • 1 in 2 Aussies order in to save doing the dishes or cooking a meal from scratch
  • 1 in 5 have claimed home-delivered food as their own cooking
  • Over half (51%) prefer to order in than eat out because of the effort required

ACCORDING to new data, time-poor Australians are using the convenience of ordering food to save on time spent in the kitchen, with over half (54%) of Aussies admitting they order home delivered food to side-step doing the dishes.

The findings, released by menulog.com.au, which surveyed over 2000 Australians, also found that 21% of respondents have ordered in and claimed dishes as their own culinary creations.

The younger the respondent, the more likely they are to order home-delivered food to do things other than washing up: close to two thirds (63%) of 18-24 year olds admit they order food and eat it straight from containers or boxes, saving time spent doing the dishes.

This compares to over a third of over 55s (39%) who would rather do other activities than wash up after their meal.

The survey also found that for close to three quarters (73%) of 18-24 year-olds and 62% of 25-34 year-olds, ordering in is the go-to solution at least once week after opening the fridge on a weeknight and realising there aren't enough groceries left to cook dinner.

The number drops significantly in the over 55s with 32% ordering in at least once a week for the same reason.

Marketing Director at Menulog, Kim Russell said "It's clear that ordering home delivered food simply saves Australians time, allowing them to be more productive in other ways.

"The figures also show that over three quarters of Aussies (88%) have ordered food in simply to reward themselves after a hard day.

Eating out at restaurants is also viewed as too much effort after a busy day, with over half of us (51%) preferring to order in than eat out because of the process required to leave the house.

The number is higher among women, with 55% preferring to order home delivered food, compared with 44% of men who would rather eat at home.

More than  four in five Australians (84%) order in with the intention of eating leftovers the next day, adding an economical benefit to the convenience factor of home delivered food.
