Abattoir resuming camel meat processing

As many as 40 jobs could be created when an abattoir at Peterborough resumes the processing of camel meat.

Rising demand from the Middle East will see Samex Australian Meat Company process up to 150 camels per day, from next week.

The camels will be from South Australia's far north and the Northern Territory.

Co-owner and director Gary Marriott said it would be a boost for the community of the town in the mid-north of SA.

"Peterborough probably has the highest unemployment in the state and I think by having the abattoirs working five days a week and utilising camel meat as an export source [it] will certainly help the area and help the industry and create jobs," he said.

Mr Marriott hoped there would be a long-term future for exports.

"We believe the demand will continue to grow," he said.

"It's not huge at the moment, but it will certainly continue to grow in the long-term.

"It's a commodity [for] which there is demand on the world scale."
