Star Sydney casino hotel tower design

The Star Entertainment Group is about to transform Sydney’s skyline with its new six-star hotel and apartment complex at its Pyrmont site.

Star has chosen architects FJMT to design the 60 level $500 million tower for the complex.

It’s all part of the incumbent casino increasing its exposure as it lines up to compete with rival Crown's planned 71-storey tower across Darling Harbour at Barangaroo. It will also see Marriott’s premium Ritz Carlton brand returning to the harbour city.

Star’s five member designed panel selected FMT in a competition that had it competing with local rival BVN and UK-based Grimshaw Architects.

The building itself will be made out of sandstone, the material which helped create 19th century Sydney. It will be at the base of the building and then fade out as it tapers outwards at the top.

FJMT Design Director Richard Francis-Jones told Architectureau that the design vision “is for beautifully sculpted architecture that will seem to grow from the great sandstone of Pyrmont.”

It’s the sort of design you could only get in Sydney.

The design won’t be increasing the gaming components of the Star complex. What it will be doing instead is providing an attraction around accommodation, food and beverages.

The final design for the complex will be submitted to state’s planning and environment department. And the public will have the opportunity pass their opinion and provide some input into what might become one of Sydney’s most talked about features.

Matt Bekier, Star’s managing director and chief executive officer, said it’s all about positioning Star as a market leader.

"As an international tourism operator, you face competition at a domestic, regional and global level," Matt Bekier told the Australian Financial Review.

"If you want to be not only successful, but a leader in the industry, you need to invest and redevelop your assets to ensure the quality of experience is never compromised."
