Kid Kyoto brings a taste of Tokyo to Sydney

Kid Kyoto is opening in October on Bridge Lane in Sydney.

It promises to offer Japanese dining with a difference. The mood there will be inspired by the grungy sounds of the late ’80s and ’90s.

It will be appealing to people who not only love Japanese food but who have also have a thing about music from that era.

The Sam Prince Hospitality Group is adding this latest venue to its portfolio which includes Indu and Mejico.

Chef Seb Gee, who used to be at China Doll and China Diner, has put together the menu with the help of Group manager Richard Prout. General manager Jessica Duncan (ex-Jamie’s Italian) will also be there.

The aim is to capture the informal dining experience one encounters in Japan.

Prout isn’t giving too much away but indicated that music will be a huge influence on the mood and presentation. And it will be very different from the eateries and sushi bars in Tokyo that can be as quiet as libraries.

“The interior has a raw femininity to it with a punky Nirvana, Radiohead, Björk playlist playing in the background. It was this music that inspired the menu, if you like,” Prout told Broadsheet. “It’s going to be relatively grungy in a kind of izakaya style as they are in Kyoto and Tokyo in Japan.”

The restaurant will have a chef’s table offering.

There will also be an Omakase menu (that’s Japanese for “I’ll leave it up to you”).

The food will come with a casual and informal izakaya-style of dining. Diners will have small share plates and raw seafood dishes and a large portion of the menu will be cooked over Japanese charcoal so there will be a large robata grill in the kitchen.

“We’re definitely not a traditional restaurant,” Prout told Broadsheet. “We’re utilising Australian ingredients but giving them a Japanese-Australian take.”
