Qantas and Rockpool strike deal to reward frequent flyers

Qantas and Rockpool Dining Group have struck a deal which will see frequent flyer members earning points at any one of Rockpool restaurants.

The Rockpool Dining Group portfolio includes 57 restaurants across 16 brands in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth.

The deal will allow Qantas frequent fliers to pick up the bill at these restaurants.

The arrangement include venues like Rockpool Bar and Grill, Fratelli Fresh and the Burger Project, with their points.

Launching last Friday, members will earn double the usual number of points per dollar for the first six months to 31 May.

The deal will see members generally receiving two points per dollar spent (or four for the first six months) at Rockpool's premium and casual dining options, such as Sake Restaurant and Bar and the Argyle, and one point per dollar spent (or two for the first six months) at Rockpool's fast casual options, like Burger Project Fratelli Famous and Sake Jr.

Redeeming points to cover a meal has a rate of $20 per 4000 points. The minimum redemption increment is 4000 points.

So the arithmetic of the deal requires 6000 Burger Project classic burgers to fly economy from Sydney from Paris (based on an estimate of 60,000 points), or 800 to fly to Melbourne (based on an estimate of 8000 points). Alternatively, it can be half these amounts if you ate them all in the next six months.

The deal is all part of the Qantas strategy to expand its frequent flyer program.

At the end of October, Qantas and Uber came together in a partnership for Qantas frequent flyers to earn points on Uber trips moving to and from eligible airports in Australia.

There are also partnerships with Airbnb and health insurer NIB.

Rockpool’s culinary director Neil Perry, who has also worked as Qantas’ consulting chef for 20 years, is excited about the partnership.

“I now feel like Qantas has 60 new lounges,” Perry told Fairfax Media.
