World Chefs may be coming to Sydney in 2022 ACF reaches final three in bid for conference

Sydney has been named as one of the top three cities shortlisted to host the World Chef Congress in 2022, after a strong presentation was made to the global association by the Australian Culinary Federation.

The Worldchefs Congress is the peak event for professional chefs from around the globe. It runs every second year and attracts over 1000 delegates who attend a series of seminars, competitions, dinners and workshops. The right to be a host city is hotly contested.

“In conjunction with Business Events Sydney we put together a pitch that impressed the review committee with the planning and infrastructure we have put in place” said Neil Abrahams, National President for the ACF.

“There was a lot of debate about which city should put forward the bid but Sydney was a pretty obvious choice. The new International Convention Centre Sydney, the draw of the harbour, the enthusiasm of local chefs and support of State Government all contributed to the strength of the bid.”

Neil adds “the last time Australia hosted this event was 1998 in Melbourne and it was regarded as one of the best congresses ever run. The world has changed a lot since then but we are keen to capture the same sense of camaraderie and excitement in Sydney in 2022.”

Another bonus of running the event in Sydney will be the co-location of the Worldchefs Congress with the popular Foodservice Australia tradeshow. This will add tremendous value for delegates who will experience the latest food, drink and equipment. It will also give local visitors some access to the congress such as the competitions.

Tim Collett, Exhibition Director, says if the bid is successful it will be a real win-win for visitors, exhibitors and the chef association. He says “the more industry people we can get involved the better. It is all about networking and sharing the best ideas from Australia, Asia and the world.”

The other cities shortlisted for the conference are Rimini and Abu Dhabi. Voting for the host city will take place at the congress being held this July in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Each of the 102 Worldchefs member countries has one vote.
