Melbourne restaurant Attica has been ranked in the 20th spot in the annual ratings of the World’s Top 50 restaurants.

Attica actually defied the trend among many established restaurants throughout the world and actually improved its international ranking, moving up the list 12 places.

The   World’s 50 Best Restaurants rankings were announced this week in Bilbao Spain.

Attica is the only Australian restaurant on the World’s Best 50 list. It has also been named Best Restaurant in Australasia.

Chef Ben Shewry, who operates Attica, put it down to a lot of hard work and investment.

“I’d put it down to just getting better generally,” Shewry told The Australian. “After purchasing the restaurant just under three years ago I’ve been able to reinvest in it significantly. The dining room renovation last year was huge as well as an improved team in both front-of-house and kitchen. It’s the most harmonious it’s ever been in my opinion and that reflected in the work and the experience for our guests.”

The world’s best restaurant on the list was Osteria Francescana, in Modena, Italy.

“I will use the spotlight to show the world that chefs in 2018 are much more than the sum of their recipes. We are all part of the same revolution… we will show the world we can be part of change in the world,” the restaurant’s chef and owner Massimo Bottura told the crowd gathered in Bilbao.

El Celler de Can Roca, in Spain, which had previously named the best, came in at number two.

The World’s Best 50 list is put together by juries from 26 regions and each has its own voting panel of 40 members including a chairperson.

It’s a system that sees each juror voting for six restaurants in their own region and four outside. Jurors are obliged to keep details of their votes to themselves.
