Historic Gembrook hotel gutted after fire

A historic hotel in Melbourne's outer south-east has been gutted following a large fire on Monday.

The Ranges Hotel in Main Street, Gembrook, saw emergency services fight the blaze which was eventually brought under control on Monday morning.

The hotel was believed to be empty when the fire took hold and there are no reported injuries.

Locals spotted smoke coming from the recently renovated hotel and alerted emergency services who turned up around 6am with 50 firefighters to battle the blaze.

Local bakery worker Rachael told ABC Radio Melbourne that the smoke coming out was “very thick and black”.

"[There are] police everywhere, a lot of locals have turned up watching it," she said.
