First stage of Adelaide’s Sussex Hotel makeover complete

A historic hotel in Adelaide’s Walkerville has unveiled phase one of several stages of renovation.

Located on the corner of Walkerville Terrace and Stephen Terrace, The Sussex Hotel dates back to 1905, and has retained its art deco design from the 1930s.

The first stage of renovations includes the deco façade and front bar, which now serves a new range of craft beers and selected wines. The menu has been overhauled by a new team of chefs serving up classic pub favourites, with plans for a new pizza oven on the cards.

Owner Piers Schmidt, who also has Adelaide’s The Union and the Earl of Leicester in Parkside in his portfolio of venues, says the renovation is “about keeping it local, tasteful and traditional”.

Further renovations are planned.
