US chef fired for serving students kangaroo for lunch

A chef at a US school has reportedly been fired for serving students kangaroo meat for their lunch without telling them.

Kevin Frei served up the unusual menu choice for students at Potter-Dix Public School, in Nebraska, for a month before the school realised.

School superintendent Mike Williams wrote a letter to parents and students apologising for the “anxiety and any harm” caused, saying he took the matter “very seriously”.

“It is without a doubt not a normal staple of our diet and will not, nor will any other non-staple foods, be a part of the Potter-Dix meal program,” he said.

“If a family wants to eat exotic foods, they can do so on their own time — not at school. If we were to have food or ingredients that are out of the ordinary, they should be listed on the menu so that the students and families are aware of what they would be being served.”

Frei defended his actions, claiming kangaroo meat was recognised for its “nutritional value”.
