Plans for boutique hotel in Redfern back on the table

Plans for a 3.5/4-star hotel in Sydney's Redfern are back on the table after being scaled back to three levels and 58 rooms.

Local developer Zhengde Real Estate has resubmitted plans to go ahead with the development of the site at 589-591 Elizabeth Street.

The company scaled back the size of the development after local opposition and discussions with council to maintain privacy for nearby residential blocks. Zhengde has also committed to keeping trees along Elizabeth Lane and removing balconies fronting the lane and rooftop facilities.

The developer previously focused on home dwellings in the lower north shore of Sydney but has since turned its focus to hotels, according to project manager Enhance Group.

“I am seeing more clients looking for raw sites for hotel development,” Enhance’s Leo Wang told the Australian Financial Review. “Many of them already have capital in Australia but as the housing market changes, they look to other ventures such as hotels, offices or land banking.”
