Council moves to protect Sydney's heritage pubs from developers

The Inner West Council is moving to better protect its heritage pubs.

The council will partner with students from the University of Technology Sydney to research the heritage significance of the roughly 20 heritage hotels across Balmain, Rozelle, Annandale and Enmore in order to inform which of those pubs the council puts forward for greater heritage protections.

The move comes as more developers are eyeing the city’s pubs for other development opportunities such as apartment blocks.

There are 66 pubs in the Inner West local government area of which 31 are heritage-listed and 24 have some protections because they sit in a heritage conservation area.

The Vic on the Park pub at Marrickville, Rozelle’s Garry Owen Hotel and The Bridge Hotel, Dick's Hotel in Balmain, Newtown's Sandringham Hotel and the Queens Hotel in Enmore are all set to be looked at.

"Other pubs that aren’t currently listed but, in my opinion, should be are the Annandale Hotel, the 3 Weeds Rozelle, and the Unity Hall Hotel,” Inner West mayor Darcy Byrne told The Sydney Morning Herald.

"We can't prescribe what kind of businesses owners operate, but we can put heritage protections in place to protect the bar and potentially the facade.

"That will mean there is still some flexibility for publicans to adapt to another hospitality use such as a whiskey bar or wine bar, and you can use other parts of the building for commercial uses."
