Le Sands Restaurant shuts its doors after four decades

Le Sands Restaurant at Sydney’s beachside suburb Brighton-Le-Sands has ceased trading after 40 years.

The site was repossessed by the property owner Cook Park Reserve Trust after being in breach of their lease for some time.

"They had been given ample time and opportunity to rectify the breaches but had failed to do so,” a council spokesperson said. “Council was left with no other option but to repossess the property."

The lease holder had also sublet part of the property to two other restaurants, Hurricanes Bar and Grill Republiq Shisha Bar and Grill. But neither of these restaurants is in breach of their agreement with the head leaseholder.

The council will issue temporary licences to allow them to continue operating and will continue working with both tenants to minimise any disruption to their businesses.

"Bayside Council recognises the importance of this site as a vibrant commercial hub and popular community venue," the council spokesperson said.

"This decision was not taken lightly and Council is looking at all opportunities to ensure the ongoing success of businesses operating on this iconic site."
