Joint effort to oversee redevelopment of Sutherland Entertainment Centre

Sutherland Shire Council has picked two Sydney-based architecture firms to oversee the $21.8 million redevelopment of the Sutherland Entertainment Centre in Sydney's south.

Chrofi and NBRS Architecture will now oversee the redevelopment of the 40-year-old centre which will include a redesigned theatre, a new foyer, enhanced accessibility as well as a refreshed forecourt and backstage facilities.

“A key aspect of our proposal was to improve the interconnectedness between the Entertainment Centre and Peace Park,” Chrofi director Steven Fighera said.

“Including a north facing veranda and versatile foyer space will evoke a relationship where the building and park will begin to feel very much a part of each other, and become a catalyst for community activation and cultural engagement.”

A new restaurant is also on the cards, which will activate the southern edge of the park as well as create a more visible and accessible entry to the entertainment centre from the park.

Sunderland Shire mayor Carmelo Pesce said the community had responded positively to the key elements of the two firms design.

“It’s a significant project so we’ll be taking a cost-effective and environmentally sustainable approach to development,” Pesce said.

The design is expected to be finalised later in 2019 and the project is slated to be complete in 2022.
