Pig 'n' Whistle to close as Queen Street Mall puts the site to tender

The Pig 'n' Whistle pub in Brisbane's Queen Street Mall will close following a decision by Brisbane City Council to evict the pub and look for a new tenant.

The pub has been on a month-to-month contract since 2017, after its original 15-year lease expired in 2014. However, the council decided to that the time was right to demolish the site and put it out for tender as part of the mall’s ongoing refurbishment.

“In 2015, council released the Queen Street Mall Visioning Plan, which set a vision for how any future revitalisations or changes to the mall should occur, and a big focus of that was to make sure it was a mall for all,” Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said.

“The feedback we received is that changes should wherever possible should be incremental improvements on whatever is there at the moment.”

Schrinner said that the council had received strong interest in the site. The pub’s owner, The Mantle Group, said it would throw its hat into the ring again.

"We’re really glad the council has called for tenders, we’re delighted for that and we’ll be submitted an exciting and innovative bid for that site," said Mantle Group chief executive Godfrey Mantle.

"We’ve been in the mall since 1982 and we love the mall, we love the people and we enjoy being there."
