Patrons say farewell to Concord RSL

Loyal patrons of Concord RSL and Community Club in Sydney are farewelling their much loved venue which is calling last orders.

The RSL is looking to sell the land while an application to vary its use and allow a development that includes an eight-level apartment block and 110 units on site awaits approval by NSW Planning.

Administrators announced the final call to cease trading last week following a dispute between RSL NSW and the local sub-branch resulted in the sub-branch dissolving. The club then went into voluntary administration.

Speaking to The Sydney Morning Herald, a spokesman for RSL NSW said the organisation is currently "in an exclusive due diligence period with a potential purchaser" but had no intention to develop the site.

The application previously lodged with NSW Planning was "by an unrelated third party" and "is unconnected with the current negotiations between RSL NSW and the potential purchaser," he said.

When the council originally sold the land to the Concord District RSL sub branch in 1963, the contract included a covenant that it was only to be used for an RSL Club and other associated recreational uses.

City of Canada Bay Mayor Angelo Tsirekas said that stakeholders had been "kept in the dark".

"I don’t know exactly what RSL NSW are planning for the land because they have not provided that detail to me, to the council or to our community," Tsirekas said.

"I can tell our residents right now – we will fight tooth and nail against an eight-storey high rise development on the Concord RSL site."
