Hilton pitches for new Canberra hotel despite oversupply warning

Hilton is looking to open its first property in Canberra which if approved would be built as part of a “World Trade Technology Centre”.

The luxury hotel chain put in an unsolicited bid to the government to build a 5-star Hilton Canberra in partnership with two Sydney-based entities, Ledrae Hotels and M20.

The Hilton Canberra would also feature “signature” restaurants, bars, a health club, pools and grand ballroom, while the entire development would also include a hotel school, a child care centre and a nursing academy.

The pitch comes as more than 700 hotel rooms are under construction or in the planning stage in Canberra, according to real estate firm CBRE, pushing some industry voices to warn the city is at a tipping point in terms of oversupply.
