Canberra’s Niagara Cafe to be out on the market

Niagra Cafe

The longest Greek-run cafe in the country is set to be go up for sale for only the second time in a century.

The owners of the Niagara Café in Canberra’s Gundagai hope the new owners maintain some of the iconic art deco charm which includes booths, mirrored counter and a menu of spiders and burgers.

The café has been visited by many famous faces over the years including actor Jackie Chan and former prime ministers John Curtin and Gough Whitlam to name but a few.

"It's going to be a huge sentimental move to see it go," owner Tina Loukissas told the Guardian News. "It's so full of character, and it's been our life for so long now.”

The Loukissas family bought the cafe in 1983 and have been running it ever since, but the death of Tina’s father and illness in the rest of the family meant it was time to pass the torch.

"But I hope someone will buy it who will preserve its lovely historical features yet will also take advantage of its potential to make it even more beautiful,” she said.
