Plans for new build luxury hotel for Sydney CBD progress

Luxury Hotel for Bligh Sreet

A planned $750 million luxury hotel on Sydney’s Bligh Street has moved one step closer forward after the developer was given approval to submit a State Significant Development application for the project.

Tourism Accommodation Australia NSW CEO Michael Johnson welcomed the news, praising NSW Planning Minister Rob Stokes for allowing the 55-storey Ritz-Carlton hotel to finally enter the detailed planning phase after months of delay.

“As Australia’s only truly global city we are judged on our levels of accommodation – luxury hotels like this one planned by SC Capital are needed if Sydney is to retain its crown as the nation’s only gateway city,” Johnson said.

“For the first time in four years Sydney is seeing substantial new hotel supply coming online with about 10,000 rooms in the pipeline.

“Developments like this proposed 220-room luxury hotel for Bligh Street help cement our status amongst high end travellers in particular – a vital part of the market.”

Johnson also said The Star Entertainment Group’s six-star Ritz-Carlton hotel project should get the greenlight.

“TAA NSW has always said this is a project that needs to get the go-ahead,” he said.

A public enquiry has opened on whether the proposed hotel in Pyrmont should be approved.
