Petition to support Darwin café staying al fresco

More than 1600 signatures have been gathered supporting a local cafe in Darwin to continue providing alfresco dining after owners said they may have to close their doors.

Cafe Central owner Daniel Treacy told the NT News that he had operated his local cafe for the past six years before realising he needed to submit an application for alfresco dining.

“If this outdoor dining was to be rejected then we would have to unfortunately close the cafe,” the petition said.

“This is because it would not be possible to sustain the business.”

Treacy said the café supports local employment.

“We employ a range of staff as well as giving the opportunity for lots of kids to have their first job,” he said.

“We aim to provide a space that is inclusive to all as we want to add value to the local area and Darwin as a whole.”
