Docklands pier venues in limbo as repairs continue
Venues at Melbourne’s Central Pier have called for some clarity over its future after the pier was closed down suddenly due to safety concerns.
The situation is still in limbo weeks after the pier was evacuated following a warning by engineers that the structure had deteriorated and wasn’t safe to use.
Development Victoria has offered no timeline while urgent remediation works are carried out.
Venues affected by the closure include Woolshed, Mill & Bakery, audiovisual tech company Austage Events, the head office of hospitality business The Atlantic Group, Mama Rumaan, nightclub Alumbra, and event spaces Peninsula, MAIA, Sumac and Sketch, with some 1300 employees facing an uncertain future.
“This has been an extremely stressful period for all of our staff who want answers from Development Victoria about when they will be able to return to work on Central Pier,” a spokesman from Central Pier said.
“We are focused on providing clarity and certainty for 1300 of our employees, as well as the hundreds of corporate and social clients, and customers who have bookings at Central Pier.”
There are reports that the project could take up to six months.
