Council takes action over ‘unapproved structures’ at Howard Smith Wharves

A build-up of congestion in areas around Howard Smith Wharves that serve pedestrians, bicycles, scooters and act as a loading zone has forced Brisbane Council to take action of over a number of new bars and pop-up venues that have been built.

The Council is looking into why the venues have been constructed without the proper approval.

"Council is now in discussion with the applicant to rectify the issues and to obtain the correct approvals, or remove unapproved structures," a spokeswoman told The Brisbane Times.

Howard Smith Wharves said in a statement it was working with the council to rectify the issue.

"After a busier than anticipated first year, we have identified a number of necessary improvements and are in the process of undertaking operational and maintenance works to improve the usability of some spaces and prepare for the busy summer months ahead," the statement read.
