Strict guidelines for proposed hotel at National Arboretum

A two-storey height limit has been put on the proposed luxury hotel or eco-lodge at Canberra’s National Arboretum.

The National Capital Authority (NCA) has also limited the number of guest rooms to 40.

Additional amenities such as a restaurant and supporting back of house facilities will only be permitted within the hotel where it can be demonstrated that they are necessary for its successful operation.

The development should be energy efficient through the use of building orientation, solar panels and shading to glazed surfaces. It should also collect and reuse of stormwater and use greywater for greater water efficiency, according to the NCA.

The building also needs to emphasise its connection with nature and take advantage of views including those to the Brindabella Ranges.

The design limits come ahead of public consultation this week of an amendment to the National Capital Plan that would allow the development.
