Melbourne restaurant checks customers' temperature before they enter

A restaurant in Melbourne’s Southbank is screening the temperatures of all their customers before they enter in an effort to protect both their staff and other patrons from coronavirus.

Italian diner La Camera has also halved its 250 seating capacity and separated its tables to increase the distance between diners.

La Camera owner Lino Scidone said he took the drastic action after talking with relatives in Italy which is currently under a total lockdown, saying they were “petrified”.

"They are saying 'take it seriously' and 'do not muck around with this'," he told The Age.

"I've got 60 staff and I don't want to shut. What would they do with mortgages and rent?

"As an owner, it is probably best to shut at this stage. But this isn't about profit anymore – this is about keeping things ticking over."

So far, he has not had to turn anyone away.
