Man jailed for breaching coronavirus quarantine to visit girlfriend

A Perth man has become the first person in Australia to be jailed for breaching emergency coronavirus laws after he was caught repeatedly sneaking out of his hotel room to visit his girlfriend.

Jonathan David was provided with a room at a city hotel to quarantine for 14 days after flying to Perth from Victoria. But he was caught on CCTV leaving his hotel via a fire exit before taking pubic transport to travel across the city.

David was sentenced by Perth Magistrates Court to a partially suspended jail term of six months and two weeks.

He will have to serve a month of the term immediately, while the remainder can be spent in the community.
