Owner moves family into famed Hawkesbury inn to save on rent

The owner of Sydney’s Berowra Waters Inn has decided to move into the famed waterside venue as a way of cutting costs during the Covid-19 shutdown.

Brian Geraghty said he could not afford to pay rent for both the restaurant and his residential apartment while there was no income coming in.

“The financial aspect played a bit but if I had to spend time cooped up inside I’d rather be on the Hawkesbury,” he told The Daily Telegraph.

Geraghty converted the venue’s loft into sleeping quarters for him, his partner Victoria Zwierzynski and 14-month-old son Otis.

The family now use the private dining room as a family room while the kitchen, which was used to prepare a degustation menu nightly, is now just used for family meals while the restaurant is out of action.

“I’ve spent a lot of time here since 2012, long days, and we’ve seen a lot, especially the wildlife being on the water, but I never expected to be changing diapers in the dining room,” he said.
