Sydney Cove Oyster Bar loses bid to keep its Circular Quay site

The Sydney Cove Oyster Bar is set to lose its habourside location after the NSW government declined to renew its lease.

The iconic seafood venue has occupied its envious spot at Circular Quay for more than 30 years after converting what was initially a derelict toilet block in 1988.

Owner Philip Thompson said he thought they had put in a “competitive world class tender” which included plans for an upgrade that involved replacing the venue’s white umbrellas with new overhead designs, as well as revamping the bar and outdoor dining area.

“It’s incredibly disappointing to have lost," he said.

A spokesperson for the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment said they had received “extremely competitive bids” and is currently finalising the new lease for the site.

"In acknowledgement of the impact of COVID-19, the current tenant has been provided with 11 months’ notice allowing them to trade until 31 March 2021 at a reduced rate," the spokesperson said.

Thompson has called on the public’s help, urging them to sign a Change.org petition to support the business staying on the site.
