Top cop glassed in the face at Dubbo pub

A man has been charged after an altercation in a NSW pub where an incoming assistant police commissioner had been glassed in the face.

The victim, Superintendent Peter McKenna, is considered a rising star of the police force and was only recently promoted to assistant commissioner for the northern region.

Anonymous police sources have revealed that the incident occurred at a wake in Dubbo for an ex police officer. A group of officers headed down to the pub located on Brisbane Street, following the funeral of Sergeant Brad Edwards.

A spokeswoman for NSW police said emergency services were called to the pub just after 11pm and the injured police man “had been treated at scene before he was taken to Dubbo Base Hospital”.

“A 45-year-old man was arrested and taken to Dubbo police station.”

Leslie Charles Cobby has been charged with wounding a person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. He appeared in Dubbo Local Court on Saturday. He was granted bail under the condition that he must not go near Superintendent McKenna or any other prosecution witness.

The Dubbo man was also ordered to refrain from drinking alcohol, taking drugs or entering any licensed venues.

According to Assistant Commissioner Geoffrey McKechnie, Superintendent McKenna was still awaiting surgery on Saturday afternoon.

“He is receiving ongoing care and looks forward to resuming duties at the appropriate time,” the Western Region Commander said.
