More More drinkers preferring reds to whites

Australians are drinking more red wine and less white.

Figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics show domestic white wine sales dropped more than 13 per cent in the June quarter.

In that time, sales of red wine varieties increased by more than 17 per cent over the same time a year before.

Managing director of Angove Family Winemakers, John Angove, said the Chinese market also was helping bolster Australia's red wine industry.

"On the export market, the extra component is the very strong leaning of the Chinese market to red wine," he said.

"It's 10 litres of red wine to one litre of white wine going to China.

"They are very red wine-oriented and the wine industry is continuing make good inroads into the Chinese market."
