W Sydney set to open in October 2023

W Hotels has confirmed the opening date for its Darling Harbour property.

This Sydney hotel, which will be the brand’s largest hotel in the world, will open to guests in October 2023.

While there have been lengthy delays, the curved, glass-clad property will be worth the wait.

W Sydney was meant to open in 2020.

“There have been delays, but trust me, it will be worth the wait,” General Manager Craig Seaward said.

"It’s as much for locals as it is for tourists, and that is very much aligned with the change that we are seeing in Darling Harbour.

"Once a tourist enclave, it now has restaurants, experiences and facilities that appeal to Australians and Sydneysiders. W Sydney will take that to the next level; we see it as the halo of the harbour."

The hotel was originally slated to open as part of The Ribbon, a 30-storey entertainment complex.

As with many sites though, construction was halted when Porbuild went into administration.

The $1 billion development is now back on track.

London-based interior design firm Bowler James Brindley is behind the design and had previously fit out W Barcelona.

All 585 rooms will be different.

W Sydney will feature an infinity pool and “wet deck,” an Away spa and 925 square metres of event space including a grand ballroom.

There will also be a two-storey rooftop bar overlooking the city.

W Brisbane opened in 2018, as the first entry of the brand into Australia.

The Marriott International-owned W Sydney follows on the heels of W Brisbane which opened in 2018 and W Melbourne, which was unveiled in December 2021.
