Burleigh Heads restaurant assault leads to trial

A man accused of a vicious assault outside a popular Burleigh restaurant will stand trial.

Cain Zilus Bird faces one charge of grievous bodily harm, after the 19-year-old punched a 23-year-old man in the face before fleeing the scene.

The alleged victim suffered a broken jaw and lost fourth teeth and had to undergo surgery at the Gold Coast University Hospital.

The incident which happened in September 2022 was captured on CCTV.

Police released footage of the assault in their efforts to gather information in a public appeal. Bird then turned himself in to the Broadbeach police station on 6 October.

The Tweed Heads man was charged and released on bail.

Several witness statements were submitted to court by prosecutor Donn Reid, including from detectives and a medical practitioner.

No formal plea has been entered and when asked by Magistrate Janice Crawford whether he had anything on the matter he said only, “No”.

Bird will stand trial in the Southport District Court at a date to be determined.
