Neil Perry to open new Asian restaurant in “Margaret precinct”

Neil Perry continues to open new venues at a prolific rate.

It seems like an eternity since the celebrity chef stood down as culinary director of the Rockpool Group in 2020, but he Perry has been far from quiet in the intervening years.

His new venture will be an Asian restaurant in Sydney’ Double Bay, just a block away from his two-hatted flagship restaurant, Margaret. Which he named after his mother and opened in 2021. Margaret is surrounded by Perry’s more casual Next Door wine bar and cult bakery Baker Bleu.

The new diner will be a 150 seater Asian restaurant, set to open late in 2023.

Perry is no stranger to Asian dining having overseen Wockpool, XO, Spice Temple and Jade Temple over the past 30 years.

“We’ll have both classic and modern takes on Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Vietnamese dishes” Perry said. “The important thing is that whether it’s roast duck or Ben Collison’s coral trout steamed with ginger and spring onion, it has to be the best version of itself.”

The restaurant will be located on the corner of Bay and Cooper streets in Double Bay in a mid-20th century building designed by renowned Australian architect Neville Gruzman.

Perry is building the precinct, he calls “Margaret precinct” into a dining powerhouse. The estimated real estate footprint is 1240 square metres and growing.

“The whole precinct will be about interaction, from bread and coffee in the mornings to cocktails and modern Asian dining at night,” Perry said.

“If the economy gets tight this year, I think we’ll see a flight to quality. People will go to the places that they know will give them what they want.”
