Wheatbelt abattoir to begin processing goats

A Western Australian wheatbelt abattoir will soon become the only facility north of Perth that is able to process goats.

The Commonwealth Government has given a facility in Gingin the tick of approval to slaughter and export goat meat to international markets.

The abattoir's general manager, Luke Jones, says that gives many WA pastoralists a much needed option to off-load the animals.

He says many abattoirs are not willing or able to process goats for areas north of Perth.

"There's probably other processors around that want to do them but the big thing is freight and everything else, so we're like the closest now north of Perth, well the only one north of Perth that can do them, so ... [they're] just waiting for us to crank up and get it all going," he said.

"Demand for the process, there is heaps.

"The station owners and the agents have been on my back for about six or eight weeks.

"They're all ready to go but we had to get over these few hurdles ... now we've done it."
