Local wines grab gongs

Tasmanian wines have performed strongly at the Royal Hobart Wine Show.

Freycinet Vineyard's 2001 sparkling won Best Wine in Show, the Best Sparkling Wine and Tasmanian Wine of the Year.

The show's most prestigious prize awarded for the best pinot noir went to Victorian winery Paringa Estate.

Freycinet's Winemaker Claudio Redenti says he is thrilled with his trophies but not surprised that local wines ranked highly.

"Tasmania is rapidly gaining a reputation for the sparkling wine state," he said.

"We've got the beautiful cool climate down here which is just perfect for sparkling wine.

"The base lines that go into it have this beautiful delicacy and elegance and liveliness."
