Hotel Steyne is hoping to create Manly's own version of late-night Chinatown hangout Golden Century when it re-opens its top floor next year.

Most of the top floor of the Steyne has been locked up for the past two years except for a small bar called the Moonshine which specialises in cider and rum.

In a couple of weeks it will open another bar upstairs specialising in fine spirits and ale, with a Victoriana- inspired interior.

The rest of the top floor, which used to be a nightclub licensed to hold 350 people, will be transformed into a Chinese restaurant that can seat 185 people.

Publican Ged Dore said the hotel had lodged an application to open the restaurant upstairs.

"We think there is a market for a supper club style venue like the Golden Century," he said.

He also hopes it will be a great place to enjoy yum cha on a Sunday.

"To me, Manly is like a big country town and in every pub in every town you will find a Chinese restaurant," he said.

He said the restaurant would have large tables, an outdoor area overlooking Manly Beach and would hopefully be open until 1am.

The restaurant should be open by March next year and is part of the ongoing transformation of Hotel Steyne from notorious night spot to a chilled-out pub.

GOLDEN CENTURY

This seafood restaurant in Sussex St opened in 1986 and is considered a Chinatown institution

The restaurant was famed partly for its exceptional Cantonese food but also for its 4am closing time which made it a popular haunt for top chefs.
