Court of Master Sommeliers offers international qualification for local professionals
The Court of Master Sommeliers (CMS) returns to Australia in April 2013 to give local sommeliers the chance to achieve internationally recognised industry qualifications. The Court offers four levels; Introductory, Certified Sommelier, Advanced Sommelier and Master Sommelier. Currently only the first two rankings are offered in Australia.
Fine Wine Partners, who have facilitated the Court into Australia since 2008 are offering 50 places in Sydney and 50 in Melbourne, with close to a third of the places already booked.
Two local Master Sommeliers will help run the programme in 2013. Franck Moreau MS, Merivale and Michael Englemann MS, Rockpool Bar & Grill will join Brian Julyan, MS, CEO of the Worldwide Court of Master Sommeliers from the UK and Cameron Douglas MS from New Zealand to conduct the Introductory and Certified examinations in Sydney and Melbourne.
Those who succeed in passing their Certified Sommelier examinations then travel to the UK or the USA to try for the Advanced and Master Sommelier Diploma.
The top Australian student for 2103 will receive funding from Petaluma to sit the Advanced Sommelier Level of the Court examinations in the UK or USA. The Petaluma Court of Master Sommeliers Dux Scholarship has been generously provided by Petaluma since the program came to Australia, with previous recipients including Ben Moechtar, owner of Delicado in 2008, Banjo Harris Plane, sommelier at Attica, in 2009, Jarrod Mills from the Merivale Group in 2010 and Richard Hargreaves, Sydney’s momofuku seiōbo in 2011/12.
