Frozen yoghurt back in flavour

Sour-tasting ice-cream or a healthy snack? Once as much of a mainstay of the 1980s as pink leotards and Madonna, frozen yoghurt is enjoying a renaissance with self-serve booths popping up around Perth.

At least eight stores have sprung up in the past three years and another is due to open in Mt Lawley soon.

Home-grown "froyo" business Red Spoon opened its flagship Fremantle store in 2010 and recently expanded to Cottesloe.

"We were originally in the gelato industry and we saw there was a growing trend towards frozen yoghurt," managing director Vickie Hills said.

She said the market was gaining momentum.

"We're getting more and more kids coming in who need their fix," Ms Hills said. "Instead of going for a coffee, they go for a froyo."

Melbourne import Tutti Frutti has opened in Leederville and is soon to launch a branch in Mt Lawley.

The brains behind Java Juice, Biff Brody, sold his juice empire in 2007 and two years later moved into frozen yoghurt.

He opened Madzoon at Carousel in Cannington and last year opened another branch in Morley Galleria.

Ms Hills said Red Spoon used an Italian powder base plus locally produced yoghurt and fresh in- season fruit.

Mr Brody eschewed powder mixes and said he used only pure Mundella yoghurt and fresh fruit.

Tutti Frutti did not respond to a request for information about its ingredients.
