Australia's first not-for-profit bar

Imagine if we told you that you could go out and have a big night but still feel good about it the next morning...

Well, get your wallets out folks, and have a drink to celebrate this dream becoming a reality.

The first of its kind in Australia, Shebeen is a not-for-profit bar that takes proceeds from each drink and donates it to various projects in the developing world.

Set up in one of Melbourne's most iconic laneways, Manchester Lane, Shebeen opened its doors for benevolent boozing just three weeks ago and has already attracted plenty of attention in the highly social city.

Shack-like in decor, the watering hole is named after the illicit bars that popped up in Zimbabwe and South Africa during apartheid and offers an "otherwordly vibe", a representative for the bar explains.

The premise is simple: Shebeen stocks exotic beers and wines from various countries in the developing world, then sends the profits back to a certain aid project in the country where the drink originated.

Bar-goers are encouraged to choose a beverage based on country, project or simply whatever floats your boat in the flavour department.

Buying a St George or Castel beer from Ethiopia will support KickStart, which helps to increase the crop yields of rural farmers by providing agricultural equipment in Ethiopia.

Wine lovers can sit back and sip on a Boschendal Chenin Blanc from Stellenbosch from South Africa and contribute towards charity Room to Read.

The out-of-the-box idea developed by co-founders Simon Griffiths and Zanna McCormish was inspired by time the duo spent working in the developing world and realising the lack of funding.

This way, the bar is "using the consumer habit of drinking and giving us the choice of where we want to help".

Not only that, the extensive drinks list is complemented with tasty morsels inspired by flavours from across the globe. Genius.
