Byron drops KFC

Plans for a KFC restaurant in Byron Bay have been rejected by the local council.

Councillors today voted in accordance with a staff report, which recommended refusal due to insufficient car parking.

The council received 350 individual submissions on the issue, with only two supporting the idea.

Byron Shire Mayor, Simon Richardson, says thousand of people also signed protest petitions.

"When you have 4500 community members and visitors all speaking in opposition, and the president of the business chamber also speaking in opposition, it clearly suggests that the community did not want it," he said.

"So to have a vote which reflected community will is a great result."
