Australian cheese pioneer dies

Pioneering Australian cheesemaker Milan Vyhnalek has died.

Mr Vyhnalek, a Czech migrant, started the Lactos Cheese Factory in Burnie, Tasmania, in 1955.

He was one of the first cheesmakers to produce specialty cheeses, introducing camembert and brie to an Australian market dominated by cheddar.

He built Lactos into Australia's largest specialty cheese manufacturer and sold the company in 1980.

The company's brands include Mersey Valley, Australian Gold and Tasmanian Heritage

Mr Vyhnalek was 87.
