Local solutions to Byron Bay’s alcohol problems

Senior AHA NSW figures are in Byron Bay today meeting with local late-trading licensees on the eve of implementation of a range of strict new measures to address the holiday spot’s alcohol-related issues.

AHA NSW CEO Paul Nicolaou and Director - Policing and Membership John Green will talk with Tweed/Byron Crime Manager Saul Wiseman before meeting with local licensees.

The main issues to be discussed will include the commencement this week of a trial measures including 1.30am lockout, refusal of entry to any person seen drinking within 50metres of a venue and restrictions on takeaway sales after a set time.

“Local licensees have been working closely with the Office of Liquor Gaming and Racing (OLGR) in developing a comprehensive alcohol-action plan,” Mr Nicolaou said.

“We are here today to provide any assistance we can in achieving these objectives.”

He said hoteliers care about Byron and its reputation and came to the table with common-sense measures that will work in reducing assaults and anti-social behaviour.

“Many of the incidents are actually occurring in the public domain, but the licensees are still putting in place tougher measures than other parts of the State to pay their part,” Mr Nicolaou said.

“Local Area Commander, Superintendent Wilkins has previously acknowledged that he and the licensees are heading in the same direction and want to achieve the same result”.

“The licensees have now taken the lead with a range of measures. We just want to ensure that they are given enough time for these strategies to take effect. Police support in these endeavours is essential and that’s what we’ll be seeking on their behalf. We know that OLGR support their efforts, and we’ll be speaking with Council, Government and anyone else to give them a fair go.

“70% of alcohol is consumed away from licensed premises and 80% of assaults occur in places other than licensed premises, the strategies have to be tailored to address that.
