Council ponders late-night security crackdown

An Albury City Council committee will consider a proposal tonight for mandatory closed-circuit TV cameras and extra security officers at late-night eateries in the city centre.

If the plan goes ahead, businesses with outdoor dining will be required to operate security cameras, as well as employ security guards after 1:30am (AEST).

The footage from the cameras would be available to the council and police.

Albury councillor and late-night pizza restaurant owner, Daryl Betteridge, has backed the idea, saying it would put to the rest the myth that Dean Street is unsafe after dark.

"I believe Dean Street is vibrant, safe and we have a treat night-time economy and social outlet," he said.

"This will help to dispel the myths, I believe, that it's unsafe and encourage more and more people to go out in the CBD of Albury."
