Gold Coast woman in hospital after mistakenly drinking grill cleaner to relieve hiccups

A woman is in hospital after she was mistakenly given a kitchen cleaner to alleviate her hiccups at a restaurant on Queensland's Gold Coast.

Restaurant operator Paul Jeynes says the woman was given a small amount of what was thought to be vinegar while dining at the restaurant eight days ago.

A common home remedy claims hiccups can be cured by vinegar.

But the liquid the 39-year-old woman ingested turned out to be grill cleaner.

The product had been beside a container of vinegar in the kitchen as staff prepared to clean up following dinner service.

Mr Jeynes says he accepts responsibility for the actions of his staff.

The woman is no longer in intensive care and her condition is stable.

Police and Workplace Health and Safety are investigating the incident.
