Goodbye to Foodie Tuesday in Sydney

It's the night Sydney food lovers forgot. Eating out on Tuesdays has all but died in Sydney.

Chefs are finding it is no longer viable to open on Tuesday nights and many are considering pulling the pin on Wednesday and Thursday, too.

"We have already closed on Monday nights and Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday lunches," said Matt Kemp, chef and owner of Randwick's fashionable Montpellier Public House.

"When we sat down and looked at what people are spending against what it costs me to be open, it's too expensive to be open."

Kemp has so far kept open on Tuesday nights, but agrees that Sydney restaurants are struggling to attract diners early in the week.

"People are really, really scared about their pay packet and how much they've got to spend," he said. "On the weekends we have a wait list as long as your bloody arm, but early in the week is bloody hard work."

"Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday are tough. We have the three-course special, but Tuesday is the only day it doesn't get taken up."

At Vinnie's restaurant in Casula, owner Tony Rizzotto does not open on a Tuesday.

"I could nearly say, 'Stuff Wednesday and Thursdays too'," Mr Rizzotto said.

Chef Stefano Manfredi says his Tuesday dinner services at Balla, at The Star, are fine as it gets trade from the casino and the Lyric Theatre, but at his other venue, Bells at Killcare, he offers a "locals' night" deal on a Tuesday.

"We probably break even on a night like that," he said.
