Grog shop opposition in Elermore Vale

Elermore Vale residents say allowing another bottle shop in their suburb is not only unnecessary but would be detrimental to the community.

Ritchies IGA has applied to the Office of Liquor, Gaming and Racing for a licence to sell alcohol from its supermarket in the local shopping centre.

The application has been on public exhibition and residents group EV CARES has lodged a submission opposing the plan.

Spokesman Steve Beveridge says there is already a bottle shop in the centre, and five in total within a two-kilometre radius.

"While we're not wowsers, we really felt that there are a few issues - alcohol-related," he said.

"And we logically couldn't see how a second outlet would make them any easier and in fact address the issues that they tend to create.

"On the balance of things, we really felt that it would not be an advantage to have a second outlet so close to a community housing area."
