Echo says odds stacked against second Brisbane casino

Queensland casino operator Echo Entertainment says there is not enough demand for a second casino in Brisbane.

Echo operates three casinos in Queensland, including Brisbane's Treasury Casino, as well as Star Casino in Sydney.

Crown Casinos chairman James Packer has labelled Echo's operations a "disgrace".

Brisbane's Treasury Casino
The head of Brisbane's Treasury Casino says they already face fierce competition for business.

Crown wants to build a new casino in the Brisbane CBD, but Treasury Casino managing director Geoff Hogg says there is already fierce market competition.

"There isn't a monopoly when it comes to international tourists," he said.

"International tourists are making choices to go to Asia to go to Australia, when they come to Australia, they're making choices to which city to go to.

"So any belief that [in] the international market we're not in a competition - we are."

Mr Hogg says if a second casino is approved in Brisbane, his company should carry out the development.

"We employ over 3,500 Queenslanders," he said.

"We've done that for 27 years.

"I think most people would sit there and say the first group that should get the opportunity to build those facilities and attract that international market would be us."

The State Government says it is keen to negotiate with both parties.
